4 Summer Security Tips

Ouch - one recent survey found that the average cost of identity theft set victims back over $1,300. Fortunately, taking a few simple steps can help you keep your information out of the hands of fraudsters.

Set alerts.

Unplugging and checking out is one of the best things about vacation. But when it comes to your finances, you should still stay somewhat up-to-speed. Set alerts on your accounts and credit cards for activity like transaction amounts over a certain amount, or a debit card purchase.

Secure your home while you’re on vacation.

The “valuables” in your house include more than just TVs and jewelry. Your personal information, often found on computers or old forms, are worth just as much - if not more - than your physical stuff. While you’re out of town, be sure to take steps to keep your home safe. This includes resisting the temptation to broadcast your vacation dates on social media or asking your neighbor to get your mail and take care of your trash.

Use public Wi-Fi with care.

Thanks to technology, more of us are still staying connected to work even while we’re on vacation. While using the pubic Wi-Fi at the local coffee shop can be convenient, be careful about what information you’re transmitting. In general, you should only submit personal information, like passwords or credit card numbers, on private or encrypted Wi-Fi connections.

Make sure your devices are up-to-date.

It’s always important to be sure that your device’s virus protection, applications and operating systems are updated, but it’s especially critical while you’re on the road. A firewall will prevent hackers from breaking into your computer, keeping viruses from spreading and helping to prevent outgoing information if you are hacked.
