How to Void a Check

Whether you need a voided check to set up direct deposit or automatic payments or just made a mistake on a check you wrote out, voiding a check is easy to do in just a few steps! Just remember, once you void a check, it can't be used for any other purpose.

  1. Pen Choice
You'll want to go with dark blue or black ink on checks—scanners and cameras don't always pick up on color ink, and you want to make sure what you're writing is clearly legible.

  2. Write VOID
On the front of the check, write the word VOID in capital letters in the "to" line, where you would normally fill in the name of the person or company. If it doesn't fill in the entire space, draw a line from the end of the word to the end of the "to" line.Do not sign the check!

  3. Avoid Alterations
It may not happen often, but you want to be prepared just in case a fraudster ever gets ahold of your voided check. You don't want them to fill in anything and try to deposit or cash your check! Always draw lines through any blank spaces on the check, like the written amount line and number amount box. This stops fraudsters from altering the check after you've voided it.
Now you're ready to send the voided check to set up automatic payments or direct deposits or shred it if it's a check you made a mistake on. Never recycle a voided check because it has your account information on it. Always securely shred it.

  4. Keep a Record
If you don't hand over the physical check you've voided (if they just need a scanned copy, for example), it's a good idea to keep it with any paperwork or contracts and store them in a safe place. This can help if there ever comes a time when you need proof of submission in the future, plus it's just good for your own record-keeping.
